Neil Gaiman on becoming an artist

“The things I’ve done that work the best, were the things I was least certain about.”

Neil Gaiman broke rules, crossed genres, and is an inspiration to those who want to make a life out of creative work.

Here’s his recent commencement address to graduating arts students.

He talks about how to stay true to yourself, embrace your “impostor syndrome” and fear of failure, make art when things get tough, find your voice, enjoy the moment, make lots of mistakes, and set your own rules.

“Nice, normal people don’t have passion”

Thank you Sean, from mostpassionate.ca, for posting this very thought provoking Ted Talk from Larry Smith.

In it, Smith explains how our plans to have a great career are doomed to fail.

He contrasts finding your passion to finding your interests.

Tears apart our preconceived notions about making something of ourselves in this world.

And berates the audience of new graduates for the excuses we all make to not find and follow our passion.

Spielberg never had a career plan

Steven Spielberg majored in English because his father said he needed a backup plan.

On the origin of dreams:

“When you have a dream, it doesn’t often come at you screaming in your face: “This is who you are, this is what you must be for the rest of your life.” Sometimes a dream almost whispers. And I’ve always said to my kids, the hardest thing to listen to — your instincts, your human personal intuition — always whispers. It never shouts. Very hard to hear. So you have to every day of your lives be ready to hear what whispers in your ear. It very rarely shouts. And if you can listen to the whisper, and if it tickles your heart, and it’s something you think you want to do for the rest of your life, then that is going to be what you do for the rest of your life, and we will benefit from everything you do.”

Thank you Danny Williams for this great find!
